Anambra govt suspends Imorka festival, others over Covid-19 pandemic

Anambra state government has suspended the 2020 edition of ‘Egwu Imorka’, a popular cultural festival that draw home Awka indigenes annually as part of efforts to contain the spread of Coronavirus in the state.
The government disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Secretary to Anambra State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, that the suspension extended to other communities in the state whose annual festivals also draws large number of local folks. It also directs security agencies to strictly enforce the suspension order as well as social distancing and other safety measures put in place by government to checkmate covid-19 spread in the state.

The statement titled “Suspension of 2020 Egwu Imo Awka Cultural Festival and other festivals in Anambra state” read in parts: “The government of Anambra state, taking cognisance of prevailing federal government curfew order, state government order on public gatherings, World Health Organisation (WHO), and Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines on preventing the spread of Covid-19, hereby, suspends 2020 Egwu Imo Awka cultural festival.
“The public, traditional rulers, presidents general, custodians and organisers of such festivals, are hereby, put on notice that they will be held responsible should any festival hold.
“Members of the public are, hereby, advised not to attend such festivals, and to stay at home, or go about their business, observing Covid-19 guidelines previously issued by the federal and state governments.
